Motivation & Goal

Permafrost is the frozen soil found in the polar regions of the earth. The melting of it is predominantly caused by global warming. Permafrost contains ancient pathogens and viruses frozen within it, so when it melts, humans will encounter diseases that are more unpredictable than COVID-19. In addition, a large-scale of methane gasses and carbon dioxide would be released due to permafrost thawing. Seeing that methane gas has a much greater greenhouse effect than carbon dioxide already does, we can infer that this would be detrimental to our planet’s health. As people living on Earth, I think we need to fully realize the seriousness of permafrost thawing, and think about how to solve this pressing issue. We should do what we can to ensure the futures of the people already inhabiting the planet, as well as the future generations to come. In order to do so, we need to continue to share what is happening, how we can slow down (or hopefully even end) global warming, and then put those words into action.
